hulllgbtcommunitypride:

Today (16th October) marks Spirit Day, on this day people wear the colour purple to show support for LGBT+ youth who are victims of bullying. Bullying is an issue that at some point in our lives, we will all face and it isn’t something anyone should just roll over and accept. But on top of the bullying we can all face, the vast majority of LGBT+ youth face bullying and discrimination just because of who they are, something that cannot be changed. The image in this post just gives some of the figures for the extent to which LGBT+ youth face, the scary thing is, these aren’t all of them, and as much as we would all like to think the bullying only comes from other young people, it doesn’t a significant majority experience homophobic or transphobic bullying from relatives, and even their teachers. This needs to stop. Its because of issues like this that we still need pride. While there are parts of LGBT+ youth who still wake up each and every day, dreading school. Putting up a front. They have been LGBT+ from birth – they probably don’t even know that yet, but they know they don’t fit in. While 97% of young LGBT+ people hear insulting homophobic remarks. While a shocking truth is that LGBT+ children are five times more likely to commit suicide than their straight counterparts, we will still need pride.Let’s stamp out homophobic and transphobic bullying together!

"Photography is space, light, texture, of course, but the really important element is time - that nanosecond when the image organizes itself on the ground glass."

The Art of Matthew Grabelsky

Facebook | Saatchi Art

A native New Yorker, I grew up surrounded by artists. In college I studied astrophysics, which taught me how to observe the world, and art, which allowed me to express my relationship to it. After graduating from Rice University in 2002 with both a BA in Art and Art History and a BS in Astrophysics I moved to Florence, Italy where I spent four years studying the techniques of classical drawing and painting.

Since completion of my studies in 2006 I have focused on creating meticulously rendered oil paintings and carefully modeled wire mesh sculptures that juxtapose the “real” world with that of the subconscious. My work blurs the line between what we see around us in contemporary society with that of the imagination and dreams, bringing attention to the numerous and yet often unnoticed absurdities of daily life.
